The ruins of Ephesus are beautiful, but they are also a lesson in ancient engineering. Every colonnade, vault, and drain you pass was the product of deliberate design: a city planned on a slope, supplied with water from distant springs, drained, paved, and built to impress. The spine is the road we call Curetes Street, which rises gently from the Library of Celsus toward the upper city. At its top, the street opens into the State Agora, the political center, and along its sides the planners placed the monuments, fountains, and houses of the elite in a controlled sequence.
The result is a city that reads like a designed experience: you arrive at the top, process downhill, and end at the theatre and the harbor street, with the great public spaces arranged like rooms in a single composition.

The Great Theatre is a masterpiece of hillside construction. The Terrace Houses are a lesson in how Roman builders handled difficult ground. The slope behind Curetes Street was terraced with massive retaining walls, and each house was constructed on artificial foundations cut into the hill, so that a whole neighborhood rose in stacked terraces above the street.
The houses themselves were multi-storey, with rooms arranged around courtyards and light wells, and their walls were built of rubble concrete faced with brick, then finished with frescoes, marble paneling, and mosaic floors. The engineering is invisible beneath the decoration.

The Temple of Artemis, the Artemision, was the architectural ancestor of everything you see in Ephesus. Built on marshy ground, it rested on a platform of charcoal and sheepskins, an engineering solution recorded by the ancient writer Pliny to keep the foundations stable.
Its form was the Ionic order at colossal scale: a double ring of columns, more than a hundred in all, each drum almost two meters thick and nearly twenty meters tall, with sculpted reliefs on the lower drums. The interior housed the cult statue, and the whole building stood on a vast stepped platform.
Every later building in Ephesus, from the temples of the agora to the Library of Celsus, borrowed the vocabulary perfected here. When the temple burned in 356 BC, the rebuilding made it even larger, and its style influenced sacred architecture across the Mediterranean for centuries.

Water and Sanitation: Engineering the City’s Life
A city of this size could not survive on local wells. Ephesus was supplied by aqueducts that brought water from springs several kilometers away, running on elevated arches and then through underground channels into distribution points across the city.
The water powered the public fountains, like the Fountain of Trajan on Curetes Street, filled the baths and the gymnasiums, and fed the houses of the wealthy through lead pipes. The sewers, built beneath the main streets, drained the latrines and the baths toward the harbor area.
The latrine building near the Scholastica Baths, with its marble benches and the water channel that ran beneath them, shows how seriously the city took public hygiene. Ephesus’s water system was among the most advanced of its time, and its remains still shape the site’s infrastructure today.
The Harbour Works and the Arcadiane
